I don't have a tween just yet, but I was a 5th and 6th grade teacher for five years and I can say with certainty that kids this age definitely go through many changes and this is a book that any tween {that loves to read} could get into.

The Student From Zombie Island

The Student From Zombie Island
By Michael J. Moorehead

The Student From Zombie Island is a amusing and colorfully illustrated book which revolves around rumours amidst the the arrival of a new kid to school.  The kid in question is known as Bust'em Up Bill and rumours start to swirl amonsgt the students as to who this new kid is and what horrors is he capable of.  The students without knowing Bust'em Up Bill are already scared of him because of all the wild and crazy things they've heard about him.  They think he is 6 feet tall with yellow fangs and drives a monster truck.

As an elementary school teacher, I think this is a great book for young children to read before the start of a school year or any time of the year for the matter because it teaches them how not to judge or spread rumours about others before they meet them.  I would say this book is more geared toward second and third graders.  The best thing is that book is written by a kid, so any young reader would most definitely relate to the situation presented in the book.

Have you and yourkids read this book?

Summmer Read: Silver Girl

If your looking for something new to read I recommend Silver Girl, by Elin Hilderbrand.  This book came out in June and it should definitely be a must have on your reading list!

The story focuses around Meredith, who just lost everything in her life, due to her husbands'  shady business dealings in the form of a Ponzi scheme.  Luckily, Meredith receives a call from her lifelong, but now estranged friend Connie who helps her by taking her to Nantucket to lay low while she awaits the results of a pending federal investigation.  While in Nantucket, both women deal with their past and present, while slowly allowing the the power of love, frienship and forgiveness to work on them.

The characters are well developed and you get a sense of who they are and where they come from.  Most importantly, once you start reading you won't want to let the book down!

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Grieving and Recovery Review & Giveaway {CLOSED}

Up to this day, I have always enjoyed reading the Chicken Soup for the Soul books.  I find the inspirational stories easy to follow and most importantly I can always relate to them.

This time around I've had the chance to read some of the stories from Chicken Soup for the Soul: Grieving and Recovery.  I for one, happen to be the type of person that still to this date finds it extremely difficult to deal with the themes of loss and death {I've only has two close losses and they happened when I was young, so to speak} Sometimes I feel that I still haven't been able to accept that death is a part of life and right now wouldn't have the slightest idea how I would react if God forbid I loss someone close to me. But, reading these stories has helped me find out how other people grieve the loss of their loved ones and what they've done to be able to continue on with their lives.  All in all the stories have helped me see that everyone inevitably has to go through the grieving & recovery process and it is possible to continue on with your life in a way that you don't have to forget your loved ones even though they might not be physically with you.

The Portable Pediatrician

The Portable Pediatrician: Everything You Need to Know About Your Child's Health

Although I'm not a doctor I most surely like to have a slight knowledge as to everything regarding my son's health.  I find that The Portable Pediatrician: Everything You Need to Know About Your Child's Health by William Sears, MD is a very useful book to have as a part of your library.

The last time we took our son to the pediatrician it turned out he had a yeast infection in his mouth.  Of course, I get so worried at the doctor's office that I sometimes forget to ask key questions in regard to what he has.  As soon as I got home, I looked up yeast infection in the book {p. 542-544}and felt a bit relieved knowing more about the situation.  The book was very helpful and easy to follow.  This book is definitely a keeper and a must have for all parents.

21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart Book

Neal Barnard, M.D., brings us 21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart: Boost Metabolism, Lower Cholesterol, and Dramatically Improve Your Health

For those of you who think you can't live without meat, this is probably not the book for you or is it?

This book introduces you to the benefits of a plant based diet.  That's right;  no meat, fish, dairy or eggs!  At first I was a bit skeptical because in my head I had been left with just veggies and fruits.  Although I love eating these food groups I thought I wasn't going to be satisfied or receiving a complete array of nutrients.  HOW WRONG WAS I!!  This book introduces you to a whole new world of eating.  Although at first you may find it difficult to leave meat behind you ultimately discover that there are many substitutes for it, such as tofu, lentils and many other yummy options. My husband and I tried it out for several weeks and we really did feel more energized and our clothes felt a bit looser.  Not only will you start to look better, but your overall health will improve because with a plany based diet you cut out bad cholesterol and unwanted calories.

The main thing one should do is read the whole book first, plan, try out new food alternatives little by little, clean out your pantry of unwanted goods and then just go all out for it.

Have you ever considered a plant based diet?

Disclosure:  I received the feature book for review purposes only.  All opinions are my own and have not been influenced in any way.

Shaping the New You {Chicken Soup for the Soul}: Book Review & Giveaway

I just can't get enough of the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series!

Shaping the New You offers 101 stories about dieting, fitness and finding what works for you.  The foreword was written by Richard Simmons, who we all know from Sweatin' to the Oldies.  In it I learned about Richard's life and how he opened up his club Slimmons and all the great things he's done to help people overcome their weight issues.

As is expected from any Chicken Soup for the Soul book the stories really encourage and motivate you to get up and do something good for your body.  Often we associate losing weight and getting in shape with just wanting to look good on the outside, but the truth is that it can help you have a better quality of life.  Before going to bed I like to read a story or two to keep me motivated in taking baby steps toward a healthy lifestyle.  Who doesn't want to have a better quality of life?  I know I do!

Are You in Need of Energy? Then Read This!

I really dislike starting the day feeling all tired and sluggish.  Sometimes, even after getting a full night's rest I feel as though I'm not ready to start off the day.

      {source}
Luckily, I was able to review the book Get Energy: Empower Your Body, Love Your Life by Denise Austin.  This book focuses on what you can do to bring and improve your energy levels, regardless of your age.  The good thing is that this book focuses on making lifestyle changes as opposed to doing temporary changes.

      What You'll Find in the Book: {source}
      • An in-depth quiz and a “Personal Energy Plan Worksheet” to determine your energy-zappers
      • A guide on what foods to eat — and at what time of day to eat them to maximize energy
      • Five-minute stretching and breathing routines for a quick energy-boost
      • Mini-workouts you can squeeze in on your busiest days
      • Easy lifestyle changes for more radiant skin, restful sleep and a sharper mind
      • Energy makeovers of busy women just like you

By far, my favorite part of the book is the five-minute stretching and breathing routines for a quick energy-boost section.  It's incredible how much better and energized you can feel by just performing a set of specific stretches during the day.  After having tried the stretches, I can say that they have definitely changed my overall mood.  The morning stretches help me start off the day better... happy mommy equals happy baby!  The night-time stretches help me get a better sleep because I get to unwind and relax before officially shutting my eyes.

The book is a very simple read; I was able to finish it in a couple of days by reading at bedtime.  The other good thing about it is that you can just keep going back to reference it because everything is so well organized.   This book doesn't present any gimmicks or fads;  all it does is give reasonable sound advice.  The truth is that with today's hectic lifestyles we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves and then wonder why are we so tired and worn out. This book reminds us that it's ok to take a couple of minutes for ourselves each day because these little changes can make for great, big, positive changes in our lives.

      Have you read this book?

Chicken Soup: Christmas Magic-Review & Giveaway

I left on vacation back on December 16th and didn't come back until January 4th, so I was pleasantly surprised to come back home to find Chicken Soup for the Soul: Christmas Magic on my doorstep.

Who doesn't know about the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series!  The latest book out in the series has 101 stories related to Christmas and the holidays that will just warm your heart, lift your spirits and bring a smile to your face.  The cutest thing about the book is that the foreward is written by Santa and the cover page has a space for an inscription.  Everyone in the family can enjoy the book!

The good thing about this book, like all Chicken Soup for the Soul books, is that you can just read each individual story in whatever order you want and whenever you want because they are not interdependent.

I like to read these stories before going to bed.  I slip into my p.j.'s, turn on the lamp and get under the covers.  I really think because the stories are so heartwarming that I sleep better after having read them.  I truly enjoyed reading the stories!

In this book, funny stories share a place with heartwarming anecdotes such as the one about Melanie Stiles’ younger daughter, who was disappointed that she wasn’t going to sing a solo in her school’s program after all. Her older sister, who was scheduled to perform a solo piano piece, gave up her spot so her “squirt” younger sister could sing. Together, like angels, they sang “Silent Night” and the older sister demonstrated the true spirit of Christmas giving. The book is also filled with stories about families having their best holidays ever when they focused on giving instead of receiving, such as Taryn Hutchinson’s story about giving up her “perfect coat” for Christmas so that a family that has fallen on hard times can receive gifts from her family.

Book/DVD Review: 1-2-3 Magic for Teachers

As an elementary school teacher I know first hand how difficult it can be for any teacher to maintain a pleasant classroom and teaching atmosphere.  When I was in school preparing to become a teacher I never took an actual class-because there wasn't any- as to how a teacher could create a positive discipline program.  I was always told that I would learn along the way. It was not easy!

I was excited to be given the opportunity to review the book along with a the DVD: 1-2-3 Magic for Teachers: Effective Classroom Discipline Pre-K through Grade 8.  After having read the book, I wish I had had access to it during my initial stages as a teacher! At first glance, when I saw the title the first thing that came to mind was...Hmm, what are they talking about, magic!

This book, 1-2-3 Magic for Teachers: Effective Classroom Discipline Pre-K through Grade 8, gets you thinking, what can you as a teacher do to help improve your students learning experience.  We as teachers need to put more thought into the way we manage the classroom as well as how we should treat students when trying to keep order in the classroom.  Basically, you need to have a plan and can not just wing it as as the days go by.

This book gives teachers insight and tried, true and common sense techniques that will help get kids to start desirable/start behaviors and how to get them to stop undesirable/stop behaviors.

In order to get kids to disengage any stop behavior-talking out loud, throwing things around, etc- we should give them a count going from 1,2,3 pausing in between each number as to give the student time to think about what they are doing.  Numbers 1 & 2 represent individual, undesirable behaviors that we wish the students would stop doing and once you reach a count of 3, the student gets an immediate time-out. The length of time-out will vary according to the student's undesirable behavior or their age.

The key in making the 1-2-3 magic work lies within the teacher's attitude and not the counting.  Usually when adults get annoyed or angered by childrens' behavior-I am guilty if this-they tend to get emotional and over talk to children. Something, that I often did in my classroom for behaviors that really could have been resolved if I had just known about 1-2-3 Magic.

1-2-3 Magic also focuses on improving overall relationships between teachers/students and on improving and maintain students self-esteem.

The book is easy to follow and doesn't include anything technical in it, so no matter how experienced or not experienced teacher you are it'll be simple to understand. The only difficult thing would be to follow through in the classroom and stay true to this 1-2-3 Magic system.

After having read the book, I watched the DVD, which helped me visualize exactly what was being talked about in the book by observing actual classroom situations.   Although I love to read, I  liked watching the DVD. Having had the accompanying visuals gave me reassurance  that the ideas and images that went through my head while reading were exactly what was being described.

The DVD would be an ideal tool to use during Parent Night or a beginning of the school year Open House activity, where the parents could be introduced to the 1-2-3 Magic method.

      WHO SHOULD READ THIS
I definitely recommend this book to undergrad students studying to become teachers, education grad-school students, newbie teachers, teacher's assistants, experienced teachers and former teachers turned SAHM who eventually will go back to teaching-if I had been saying that it would have been a mouthful...anyone who works in academic environments where young children up to 8th grade are involved.

      NOTE FOR PARENTS
Parents, make sure you know what kind of classroom management techniques your kids' teachers use and if you notice that it's not working then recommend 123 Magic or better yet give it to the teacher as a gift!  I know I would have loved if a parent gave me this book or at least recommended it.
